The Anchor

The Anchor-OTR, a seafood restaurant and oyster bar at 1401 Race Street, is set to open later this month – just in time for Labor Day and the AVP Cincinnati Open which will bring pro beach volleyball to nearby Washington Park. Chef and owner Derek dos Anjos is excited to bring his East Coast restaurant experience to Cincinnati and especially OTR.

The Anchor-OTR’s location relative to the newly reopened Washington Park

Recently, dos Anjos gave me a tour of his 2,100 square foot space at the corner of W. 14th and Race Streets across from the newly reopened and very popular Washington Park. The restaurant itself will seat about 50 people while the outdoor fenced patio will seat an additional 25.

Charred wood wall covering gives a rustic beachside firepit feeling to the interior

Owner / chef Derek dos Anjos will use part of the basement of The Anchor-OTR as his office from which he’ll manage the restaurant

With unobstructed views of majestic Music Hall, easy access to the 450-car parking garage under Washington Park as well as the bustling activity of the park itself, The Anchor-OTR is sure to be a popular destination for visitors and OTR residents alike. The location seems to always have a slight breeze which is nice and will make its fresh seafood and the beach volleyball across the street during the restaurant’s opening week even more magical.

It’s all very nice, but I’d prefer something that speaks of Cincinnati, its history, and its people. This restaurant is trying to provide the” east coast experience,” but I can find restaurants that do that in a strip mall or suburbs of any city. I can a restaurant in OTR that sees itself as a restaurant in OTR, not a restaurant trying to pretend to be on the east coast.

*I WANT a restaurant in OTR that sees…. etc, auto correct

The Anchor-OTR is excited to be part of OTR. I said as much in the post. If you’d like a restaurant to share your vision, start one! I promise I’ll post about it too.

I would like to open a vegetarian restaurant in OTR that focuses on the seasonal and local foods. I’m a find home chef, but pretty much lack the experience, means, and know how to run a restaurant. Maybe someone else will make it happen.

Why knock a guy who has returned to his Cincinnati roots after honing his craft in a city that is known for its seafood culinary prowess? We should be ecstatic that a locally-owned seafood house has chosen OTR RATHER than a strip mall to call home. It just further adds to the mixed dining experiences within walking distance…not to mention that Zula will be opening right across the street! Are you going to knock that owner as well for investing in the once-abandoned streetscape? Be a supporter….not a hater!

Still exciting. It’s not gonna be three floors is it? Biking through there last week I noticed it as a nifty corner location, happy to see something going in. Just a block from that soon to be Japanese restaurant at the old paint building.
