Putting OTR on the (Google) Map

Considering the speed with which development is occurring in Over-the-Rhine, it doesn’t take long for Google’s understanding of the neighborhood to become outdated.  Fortunately, there are a number of ways Over-the-Rhiners can help keep Google up to speed with the changes happening in the neighborhood.

OTR Matters is starting a new project that revolves around Business Photos from Google. An overview and FAQ of Business Photos can be found here and here, respectively. Google is interested in photographing the following type of businesses:

The types of businesses we’re currently interested in include restaurants, hotels, retail shops, gyms, salons, repair shops and a variety of other storefront businesses. We’re currently not photographing legal, medical, or big brand chain establishments.

In order to apply, business owners should claim their free Google Place page here. The benefits of being listed on Google Places are explained by the case studies in the following video:

Business Photos from Google seems to be an extension of Street View Partner Project from Google Maps. The Street View Partner Project allows Google to create a Street View of special properties such as zoos, outdoor markets, monuments, parks, colleges, museums, amusement parks, etc.

Not a business owner or public relations officer for a special destination? You can still help develop OTR’s online profile by rating and reviewing your favorite places on Google here. If you rate and share enough place, you may be spotlighted on the Google Places Blog like these people. Or, you can add to maps yourself using Map Maker. Here’s how you do that:

I plan to push this project until Over-the-Rhine’s renaissance is adequately reflected on Google for all the world to see.
