Greg’s Antiques at 1404 Main Street in OTR conducts their 5th of 6 estate sales to purge all inventory as the historic building goes up for sale.

The current owners are looking to move more into traveling lawn and garden expos. We expect Greg’s to be fully moved out by January 1st; and while we can’t confirm the potential buyer or future use of the old Woodward Theater, we can simply hope that somebody has taken our advice and made plans to build a bowling alley/music venue in OTR. The space seems rather perfect for it (if a bit small), and if you’ve been out in OTR lately, you know that more entertainment space is very much needed.

The estate sales at 1404 Main Street in OTR have been hosted online by Everything but the House (EBTH). You can find bids, information and pictures from the October 3rd sale online. The final sale is set to take place November 5th, so check back on EBTH and make your bids for Cincinnati history. Prior items for sale include a World Series ring and $70,000 painting if you have some extra cash around.

More details about Greg’s as they become available. Credit to Diana Tisue for the tip.

Would an art house movie theatre be out of the question? There are already a number of bars and clubs in OTR and as you note, there isn’t space for many bowling lanes.

Good point, we’re in desperate need of a movie theater in OTR, maybe along the lines of Esquire on Ludlow (artistic, beer/wine).

It is kind of a strange space though with the grand staircase taking up so much room and for it to have such a big second floor/balcony. The sight lines throughout are horrible and so maybe a gallery or dance space where you don’t have a single focal point (such as a stage/screen) would work.

And you’re right Paul, there’s not much room for bowling sadly. It’s kind of like Southgate House just with much less continuous open floor space.

There is an “art” theatre less than 5 mi away on Ludlow (Clifton). A, albeit small, movie theatre is a great idea, esp. since there are not many “regular, feature film, movie theatres near OTR (unless you want to be a KY patron @ the levy)… Going to school & working in OTR over the last 20 years, has shown me that OTR has a lot of hidden gems, and missing pieces. Most of the time, the majority parties (aka the ppl with money) place venues/properties in OTR w/o thinking about the impact on the history, environment, and residents. Whatever the choice is, I hope that it adds to the “Queen City” glitz and glam of the past, and not the impersonal, capitalistic, bland (yeah, I said it) downtown night life.

An OTR art house could perhaps offer some of the more esoteric films that even The Esquire doesn’t show…or some of the restored historic films that are being made available. I really don’t know the economics of these things but if any neighbourhood around here could support it I would think OTR the natural choice.

There was a wonderful Italian woman I had the privilege of meeting who lived on Clay that told me she grew up across the street from the theater on 14th St. She said the firemen would stand in the door watching the movies and she would run under their legs to sneak into the theater. What a beautiful building.

Thank you Marge, that is a beautiful memory for a beautiful place.
