Danny Klingler of OTR ADOPT and Diana Tisue of the UC Preservation Action Network have teamed up to host Preserving Cincinnati: An Event to Discover and Document Cincinnati’s Unprotected Historic Places. The event is “an exploratory ‘field trip’ into many of Cincinnati’s historic neighborhoods to document the streetscapes, districts, parks and buildings that are most worthy of preservation.” Participants will meet at the parking lot next to the old SCPA/historic Woodward High School at 13th and Sycamore at 1pm. After a few hours exploring and documenting various historic places around the city, the group will gather again to discuss and share their discoveries. Bicycles are welcome because at least one group will be traveling on two wheels.

Here’s the full description:

While Over-the-Rhine (deservedly) receives great attention for its unique historic character, Cincinnati boasts numerous other historic neighborhoods and districts that unfortunately don’t get the attention they need. The result is that many of these historic buildings and places continue to be demolished at an alarming rate — as many as hundreds each year. In short, we are losing important parts of our history before our very eyes.

The time has come to create greater awareness surrounding Cincinnati’s many underappreciated historic places. Join us on Saturday, October 20 for an exploratory “field trip” into many of Cincinnati’s historic neighborhoods to document the streetscapes, districts, parks and buildings that are most worthy of preservation.

After an initial meeting, we will disperse into several teams, each charged with exploring, documenting, and photographing a different section of Cincinnati. At the end of the day we will gather again to discuss and share what we’ve learned.

This meeting, and others like it to follow, will serve as an initial springboard for a campaign to create greater awareness and better protections for the Queen City’s historic assets. We know there are many in Cincinnati who are passionate about this issue, and we hope you will join us in this effort; the quest for historic preservation in this city depends on it.

woah woah woah, who wants to tear down the building on Malvern!?!?! I would be royally pissed, people don’t build buildings like that anymore, ever.

Great idea, I’m upset I didn’t see this before it was too late – please have another one of these events! monthly? bi-monthly? Yes please!

I just read this after being out of town. I sure hope 400 Forest Avenue in Avondale was noticed along with so many others there. 400 Forest needs help and fast! How about the Haven house on Eden? Oh, forgot, the city owned house is already gone, never even put up a for sale sign.
