Indianapolis-based Core Redevelopment placed the winning bid for the former School for the Creative Arts building in a public auction. No word yet on Core’s plans for the property.
The 235,000 square foot Renaissance Revival building was constructed in 1907-1908 as the third home for Woodward High School, the first public school west of the Alleghenies. Woodward High School moved to Bond Hill in 1953. The School for the Creative and Performing Arts moved to the building in 1977 and remained there until it moved to the new Erich Kunzel Center for Arts and Education on Central Parkway near the newly renovated Washington Park.
Core specializes in converting unique, nonresidential buildings into urban, market-rate residential properties. Two of Core’s current projects are the redevelopment of an industrial warehouse built in 1888 into 125 apartments and the conversion of Bush Stadium, an Indianapolis landmark, into lofts as part of the 16 Tech district.
