Christian Moerlein House Faces Demolition

Christian Moerlein built a brewing empire and helped form this fine city. And now, the house that he bought for his daughter 120 years ago faces the prospect of demolition (for this). You can help stop this.

The current status:

The Windholtz family (current ownership) started Christy’s in 1955 and are tired of an unprofitable business. They are growing old and weary, and are looking to cash out.

The developer is afraid of a possible fight and mandated that a demolition permit be filed as part of the sale. That demolition permit was filed on March 1st.

The only snag in their grand plan is that people are fighting to designate the building as an historic landmark which would save it from the wrecking ball.

This designation and preservation of the building will ultimately be decided by the city’s Historic Conservation Board at a meeting TBD. Send us an email if you’d like to be a part of that process.

But then again, why save it? You could instead be in favor of this or this or this or this or this or this

What you can do now:

Clifton Natural Foods is not the only grocery store in the area. There is a Kroger store four blocks away on Short Vine, and the Clifton Gaslight Market is scheduled to open this year in the former Keller’s IGA grocery store space on Ludlow Avenue.

Comparing Clifton Natural Foods with… the quality of that Kroger on Short Vine is like comparing apples to oranges. The selection at Clifton Natural Foods is more akin to Park+Vine, with emphasis on finding local foods and products first, then organics and other botanically-derived products. It’s vegan and vegetarian friendly.

Even the Kroger Marketplace “organic” sections pale in comparison to Clifton Natural Foods.

If they do have to move, I’d rather see them stick around that general area. It’s real popular with UC students.

They’ve been saying for two years that the new grocery store on Ludlow will be “opening soon”. I actually moved out of the neighborhood waiting for it to open. We have too many food deserts in this city.

No Keller’s simply sucks. I moved to Clifton in 1979 to raise my kids. A hardware, movie theater, GROCERY store/Keller’s, a florist, a friendly firehouse, a POST OFFICE!, a hair salon, and GRAETER’S…..a in a 3-block walk. I loved it, still do and want a Keller’s.

Things is…When the front porch was taken off (I don’t know when and why) a consultation as to the historic architectural integrity of the building should/could have been done. It no longer qualifies as an historic landmark for this, and surely other reasons. It would take a 24/7 monitoring of every single old building in our city to keep current and effective over what should and shouldn’t happen to buildings that render them vulnerable in their future. That said…I dread seeing one more piece of U.C./Clifton Heights Calhoun and McMillan atmosphere slowly go down the tubes. I expect the beautiful YWCA building (across from darling little Vishnu Hold Their Own Restaurant to be crushed to ruins any day I frequently pass by the gorgeous place. Cheers.
